The eagerly awaited outline planning application
to build a hospital and health centre has been
formerly lodged with Waverley borough Council. This
comes after 18 months consulting with bodies including
the parish council, highway engineers and Waverley
planning officers. The scheme will include a 3,687
sq metre building on a 1.4 ha site behind the
Budgens supermarket formerly used for recreation.
The new building will be accessed off Knowle
Lane with another pedestrian access onto Village
Way and the adjoining car park. The building will
be on two floors with a novel shared reception
area to serve both the hospital and health centre.
Said CVHT chairman: Dr robin Fawkner-Corbett.
"This is a very exciting time for us. We
have been working with our Architects and the
Guildford and Waverley Primary Care Trust for
many months to ensure the Trust provides facilities
Cranleigh and the surrounding area can be proud
of. We now want the public to have their say on
this exciting scheme that will revolutionise the
way we provide health care in our area."
The PCT fully supports the venture and is taking
a integral role in turning the new building into
reality.Chief Executive Elizabeth Slinn said:
"This initiative is the proof that when a
community works together, great things can happen.
The PCT looks forward to continued working with
all partners In this venture".
Cranleigh Village Hospital Trust was formed in
November 2000 following the pending closure of
the existing 150 year-old hospital. It was formed
in response to villagers who said they would fight
tooth and nail to ensure what is reputed to be
the oldest cottage hospitals in the country remained
for the benefit of the community. The Trust agreed
to pursue a new building after the generous offer
of 3.4.ha of land from a village benefactor. This
will be exchanged for the 1.4ha application site
in the heart of the village behind Budgens supermarket
and currently owned by the parish. The Trust plans,
subject to consent, to convert the donated land
into playing fields for the benefit of the community
and transfer the ownership to the Parish Council.A
detailed planning application will be submitted
later.
To view the plans visit the Waverley Locality
Centre and the Cranleigh Village Hospital Shop
and Awareness Centre at Oliver House, High Street,
Cranleigh. Or ring 01483 276121 for more details.
The site plans will be on the website shortly. |

In April 2002, the Trustees appointed Devereux,
a Putney based practice, as architects and project
managers for the development. Devereux are currently
undertaking a detailed consultation exercise involving
the Trustees and the end users of the hospital
and health centre, prior to commencing detailed
discussions with the planning authority, Waverley
Borough Council. It is anticipated that an application
for outline planning consent will be made in the
late summer. |
